Book Review: The World of All Creatures Great & Small

The World of All Creatures Great & Small: Welcome to Skeldale House by All Creatures Great and Small.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars.

The World of All Creatures Great & Small: Welcome to Skeldale House is my first book of 2022, although technically I started it in 2021 when I received it as a Christmas gift. I’m a big fan of the new TV series, and have visited some of the filming locations, so it was an especially interesting read for me.

The book starts off with a foreword by Jim Wight, the son of Alf Wight who wrote the James Herriot series of novels. It then goes into an in-depth behind the scenes tour of everything from how the sets and wardrobes were created, to how the animals are trained and handled, and even how the music was composed.

Each chapter is written from a different viewpoint, with the main cast members all contributing a chapter each. These are fascinating, as they explain how the actors came to be in the show, and describe some of their most memorable moments. There are also a few acting tips for budding thespians.

It’s a delightful read, and like the series itself, it’s a wonderful antidote for the worries of the present world. I recommend this book for anyone who’s a fan of the new series. Well worth a read.

  1. Hi Brian – I’m a fan of the original TV series with Christopher Timothy, Robert Hardy and Peter Davison, and have the complete boxset. I had a drive up to Askrigg just a few weeks ago and had lunch at Hawes. It pains me a little to see classic TV shows and films remade. I know I may be too traditional.

    1. Hi Paul. I’m willing to try remakes for at least a couple of episodes, and I sometimes like them enough to become a big fan, as is the case with ACGAS. I didn’t watch much of the original, so I don’t really have much to compare the second series with. I felt the new version came along at exactly the right time, when we needed a bit of a lift from the depressing world situation!
